Chapter Six

This would be it. Joarr followed, and soon Henry would meet the fae sans mask. He would have the freedom to decide. If he wanted nothing further, then so be it. The scissors would be costly, but they would be worth it. However, if fate proved true and kind to both, all the better.

“When I signed that contract, I thought you would bring me to Henry immediately. Instead, it’s been three days,” Joarr growled, stomping along beside Omri.

Sighing, he retorted, “I am working as quickly as I can. It takes time.”

“Have you even told him I’m here?”

“Your bond is consummated. Why are you in such a rush?” Omri asked as if he couldn’t fathom the desperation to see another, to love someone so absolutely that the sight of them fed some starving part of his soul. No wonder everyone thought him incapable of passion. “You and your mate will long outlive us mortals, so believe me — I am working as quickly as possible.”

Eyes narrowing, the silver-haired fae crossed his arms over his chest. “What? No blessings of immortality or longevity for your beloved king?”

Radomir would live. He would have a beautiful life. The country would thrive beneath his rule, and if Omri had a choice, death would never touch him, but the king wouldn’t selfishly guard his blessings. A god would have to force immortality or longevity upon him, and still Radomir, in his sweetness and generosity, would try to give it away.

“Where are you taking me?” the fae demanded.

Omri gestured ahead. “A pub.”

“I’m not here to see the sights and eat your local delicacies. I’m here for my — !” Joarr roared, stopping with a sputter. He repeated the attempt a few times before crying out, “You bastard!”

“Oh dear, was the trickster fae tricked?” Omri drawled. Joarr hadn’t even bothered to truly read the contract. Desperation made fools of even magical men.

Readying to attack the man, the fae spat, “Explain yourself. Now.”

“The king is escorting Henry there. Meeting in the palace puts you on the king’s grounds beneath the heaviest of wards and blessings,” Omri explained. “I thought you’d prefer more neutral ground.”

“Fine,” Joarr huffed.

Omri led him to a backroom of a calmer pub, sitting down and ordering the two of them drinks. “Henry should arrive shortly. The king wanted to introduce him to some places where men who enjoyed the company of other men could meet.”

Turning his scowl on Omri, Joarr scoffed, “Shouldn’t that be anywhere?”

“One could wish,” the brown-haired man sighed. “Unfortunately, despite our short lives, mortals are slow to change. After Aelion, certain moral judgments remain strong — an expectation to prioritize having children.”

Joarr snorted, “Pathetic.”

“Aren’t fae similar?”

“I have blessings. If Henry desires children, we can have children,” the fae retorted snidely.

Omri hummed. His eyes turned to his drink, and he drummed his fingers against the counter, awaiting the king and Henry to appear. Then minutes crept by slowly. No matter how carefully he nursed his drink, a worrisome chill settled in his bones.

Could soulmates sleep with other people? Henry had no idea he had a bond.
